Advance to GO - DPA Feature Show: Business

Hello world!

What a bright sunny day it is, makes me feel all happy and warm inside. Quick quiz: what colour is associated with these words: warm, bright and sunny?

Any guesses?

Did someone say “yellow”? Yup, spot on! So smart!

Haha yes, well for today’s episode of the Advance to GO - DPA Feature Show we will be featuring the “yellow” school… a school full of warm and bright people! The Temasek Business School (BUS)! It’s known as the “yellow” school cos all business students will receive a yellow business t-shirt during orientation week :)

BUS offers 11 diploma courses, all specialising in different aspects of business. The featured diplomas today are… the Diploma in Law and Management and the Diploma in Culinary and Catering Management.

Diploma in Law and Management
Do you dream of fighting for justice and have a burning desire to speak up against unlawful practices? If that sounds like your cup of tea, then the Diploma in Law and Management is right up your alley! You will get to study various business and procedural law subjects, using the Real Environment Active Learning (REAL) approach. REAL teaching promotes active learning by simulating the actual working environment of the legal profession. Our graduates are professional paralegals, sought after by many companies in Singapore and all around the world.

Diploma in Culinary and Catering Management
Do you eat to live or live to eat? Foodies and greedy gourmands, here is the chance to pursue your one true love – GOOD FOOD! You will learn the art and science of preparing scrumptious meals through the Diploma in Culinary and Catering Management (CCM). TP has its very own restaurants and kitchens on campus for you to hone cooking skills and to experience the business of cooking. This perfect pairing of nutrition and business marries passion with practicality to give you a winning diploma!

Here are some thoughts from your future seniors!

"PPP was a once in a lifetime experience! I picked up a lot of new skills and formed life-long friendships with fellow DPA students!" -Kenny Ong, Business Studies Grouping, Year 1

"I feel that TP is the most HAPPENING poly and its Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) Diploma is the most established. Therefore, coming to TP to study HTM was the perfect combination for me” -Jasmine Loh, Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management, Year 1

"As I've earned credit units during PPP, my workload was greatly reduced, giving me more time to focus on other subjects!" -Khng Wei Lun, Diploma in Retail Management, Year 1

If you have any questions on DPA, TP or who are the cutest guys and gals on campus, do drop me a message on the tag board. *wink*

Advance to Go - DPA Feature Show: Special Episode

Hi Punks!

I am the bearer of great news! Listen up…

Frayon: You… are going to be nice to me for once?

Fanning: NO. Dream on. *rolls eyes*

Frayon: You… won’t punch me today?

Fanning: *glares at Frayon* Stop interrupting me! I have something important to say that has NOTHING to do with you! The great news is…

.

.

.

.

.

.

TP has a NEW Diploma!

YES, you heard right, we have a new Diploma in Early Childhood Studies (ECS)! How cool is that! The best part is you can opt to enroll into this new diploma in the upcoming DPA exercise.

Can you imagine me taking ECS… okay let’s not go there, but children around the world can rejoice because I won’t be terrorizing them in the future. Hyuk hyuk!

ECS students get to design and deliver child-centered lessons in areas ranging from literacy, to creative expressions. The students will also have a strong foundation in child psychology which will help them understand the way children see the world. (This appeals to the control freak in me.) Graduates from this diploma will be able to work in jobs pertaining to children and child care.

Anyway for those of you who can apply and want to know more about ECS, you can ask us questions on our tag board. Don’t forget to pop by the DPA Facebook page to interact or pose your questions to our DPA students. While you’re at it, you can add me as a friend!

Tune in to the next Episode! Or else. *cracks knuckles*

Solid as Bone,

Fanning

Advance to GO Episode 3 - DPA Feature Show: Applied Science

Welcome back to Advance to GO – DPA Feature Show! We are smack in the midst of our DPA feature show! Continuing from where we left off, I'm here to share about the fantabulous Temasek Applied Science School (ASc)! ASc is THE place to be at if you’re interested in scientific research and experimentation! With eight courses in food, chemical and life sciences, it’s a great place to nurture your passion for science and research.

The featured diplomas today are… *drumroll* Chemical Engineering and Singapore’s one and only, Veterinary Technology. These two fabulous courses will enrich your learning experience with their exciting curricula and modules.

Chemical Engineering

If Chemistry is your thing, you’ll love Chemical Engineering! With this course, you’ll get to see the products being developed in the laboratories right down to its delivery to the masses. Students in the course will get to manufacture fuel, cosmetics, plastics, processed food and medicine. So now we know who’s responsible for some of our daily necessities!

Graduates have a range of career choices, be it careers in the chemical industry, laboratory research work or the pharmaceutical manufacturing line.

Veterinary Technology

If you’ve always wanted to work with animals, this course is for you! With hands-on training in animal biology, wound management, surgical procedures, care of animals and biotechnology, you’ll get up close and personal with furry friends. Best of all, there is a five-month student internship programme either locally or overseas in the veterinary industry, research institutions or animal parks.

Veterinary Technology graduates can work as veterinary technologists, animal education officers/assistants or animal health inspection assistant in animal welfare organisations. These are just a few out of the plethora of options available. Psst, the Diploma in Veterinary Technology is ONLY offered at TP!

I have to say, while these two diplomas are Awesomely interesting, I’m still WAY ahead in that department… but I digress. If you have a burning passion and your heart is set on a course, the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) will give you an edge when seeking entry into a polytechnic. Best of all, you’ll join a superbly fun group of DPA students. These folks were screaming and jostling with each other to get a piece of me when I made a rare appearance at the campus plaza yesterday. Here are their thoughts on DPA:

“TP was my first choice because it’s the only poly to offer the course that I’ve always wanted, Diploma in Applied Food Science & Nutrition. The school campus is so appealing with great facilities! DPA allowed me to get to know the poly better and I’ve already made many new and wonderful friends during the Poly Preparatory Programme.”

– Carol Kong, Diploma in Applied Food Science & Nutrition, Year 1

“I joined TP because I love the culture here; it was the poly that left the biggest impression on me in every aspect. I’ve also joined the DPAIG (DPA interest group), which gives me many opportunities to give talks and plan events for all TP DPA students.”

– Fan Wei Shan, Diploma in Veterinary Technology, Year 1

“My friends told me how much fun TP’s DPA was and that really appealed to me. DPA allowed me to go on an ASc School discovery programme where I learnt about Problem-Based Learning, a subject offered in Year 3. I was able to experience campus life in TP and study new subjects before my friends joined the poly.”

- Lim Jia Jie, Diploma in Biotechnology, Year 1

If you want to experience the Awesome benefits of coming to TP via DPA, be sure to apply when 8 July comes about! Don’t forget – this is a great chance for you to join ME at TP!

Be sure to hit our DPA Facebook page to interact or pose your questions to our DPA students, or you can chat with us right here on our tagboard!

Watch out for the upcoming Episode 3 of Advance to GO – DPA Feature Show… it’s a good one, trust me (hint: VERY popular school). Then again, all our TP academic schools ROCK (although not as much as me, ahem).

IRAN VS CHINA (AYG)

This was certainly an Awesome™ match!

TP’s sports complex was packed with spectators waiting to watch this quarter-final match between Iran and China.

5 min into the match the Iranian team scored the first goal, giving them a lead. The Chinese soon caught up, equalizing the score, 2 all.

The Chinese team made a great effort, but they were still unable to beat the Iranians. The final score was 4-2, making the Iranian team the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.

China scores!

What a fantastic game! I cannot wait for the next match!

Advance to GO Episode 2 - DPA Feature Show: Design

Hi there!

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Advance to GO – DPA Feature Show. The feature for today is on the Temasek Design School (DES)

DES has a total of 8 diplomas. I’ll bring you the Diploma in Apparel Design and Merchandising and the Diploma in Interactive Media Design today.

The Diploma in Apparel Design and Merchandising provides students with a broad overview of the fashion industry, before choosing to specialise in either Fashion Design & Merchandising or Retail & Visual Merchandising. In Fashion Design & Merchandising, you’ll learn about & experiment with different fabrics and trims and how to draft, drape and sew to translate your creative visions in fashion & apparel into actual wearable pieces on the catwalk. Retail & Visual Merchandising is really the business end of fashion. It’s everything to do with developing, promoting, marketing and managing apparel items from conception to purchase.

Speaking about fashion, I’m happy the fashion industry is going green at last as the latest trend - using organic and green fabrics to save the earth catches on…

Do you often surf blog sites, play games, shop or chat online? If yes, then the Diploma in Interactive Media Design (IMD) is for you. You’ll get to design websites and other interactive online applications, learn about creative idea generation, colour theory, drawing and art techniques, as well as photography.

IMD students also get to work on many client-based projects and there are many opportunities to participate in local and international competitions.

I spoke to some DES DPA students, here’s what they had to say:

“DPA was a great learning experience for me, and I learnt so much especially during the Polytechnic Preparatory Programme (PPP)”

- Novina Teo, Diploma in Visual Communication, Year 1

“DPA gave me the chance to work with different groups of people on campus. The experience at TP helped me a lot, especially when the academic term started and I had to work with my coursemates on different projects.”

- Stacey Lim, Diploma in Visual Communication, Year 1

“The DPA interview was the first interview I’ve encountered. I was presented to a panel of TP lecturers and was real nervous at the start. The lecturers however eased my anxiety and I spoke with confidence as I fielded the questions from the panel – something that I’ve never thought I could do.”

- Vera Wei xin, Diploma in Interior Architecture and Design, Year 1

If you’ve any questions about DPA or would like to know more about our courses, come to our DPA Facebook page or ask us right here on our tag board!

That’s all for today. Look out for Episode 3 of the Advance to GO – DPA Feature Show as we bring you the Temasek Applied Science School!

Advance to GO Episode 1 – DPA Feature Show: Humanities and Social Sciences

Earthlings,

I’m going to kick-start the Advance to GO 2 DPA Feature Show with TP’s newest school…the Temasek Humanities and Social Sciences School (HSS)

HSS offers 2 diplomas, the Diploma in Psychology Studies and the Diploma in Gerontological Management Studies.

Frayon: Psychology and what…Ger…gero….what?

Don’t interrupt me, Frayon (rolling my eyes), repeat this, guh-ron-tl-oj-i-kuhl. To continue…

The Diploma in Psychology Studies is all about understanding how other people think and behave. This diploma is for you if you enjoy interacting and working with others to bring out the best in them. Upon graduation, students can enter careers in human and social services, education, human resource management, and other people-oriented careers such as public relations, sales, advertising and many more.

Diploma in Gerontological Management Studies students will play an important role in the silver industry. As our aging population increases, a large number of skilled people will be required in this field, and that is why the graduates from this diploma will be in high demand! And you know what, TP is the one and only poly to offer this diploma in Singapore!

Hey! I’ve got a couple of good friends in TP who joined HSS via the DPA route, and here’s what they’ve to say about DPA:

“I chose TP because it is such a fun and vibrant place, and you know what, everyone here is super-duper friendly. I totally made the right choice!” – Keith Lim, Diploma in Psychology Studies, Year 1

“The Polytechnic Preparatory Programme (PPP) not only taught me new skills, but it allowed me to build life-long friendships with other DPA students! – Keith Yau, Diploma in Psychology Studies, Year 1

“Coming to TP through DPA is great! It allowed me to chalk up credit units even before my friends started school! I now have more time to focus on other subjects, and also my CCAs.” – Fuhairah Bte Abdul Karim, Diploma in Gerontological Management Studies, Year 1

And if you have any burning questions about DPA or our courses, you can talk us on our DPA Facebook page or right here on our tag board!

That’s all for today. Do tune in to the Episode 2 of Advance to GO next week as we feature the Temasek Design School!

The Clash of the Titans

After watching Tuesday’s awesome match, I HAD to go and watch today’s match between Korea and China! Throughout the preliminaries, the Korean and Chinese teams were a force to be reckoned with.

Even though it was drizzling, TP’s sports complex was flooded with spectators. From amongst the crowd I spotted many team supporters including TP staff & students enjoying the match.

At the 11th minute, the Korean team scored a goal, and shortly after, the Chinese team scored an equalizer. The crowd went wild! (But I think they were cheering because they noticed my presence and not because of the goal) In the end, the Korean team beat their opponents, 3 goals to 2.

What tenacity!

Great Defence!Final Score! JOYOUS VICTORY!

Although the Chinese team lost the match, both teams however will move on to the next round to compete against other teams for the ultimate prize and be one step closer to be crowned champions.

What an exhilarating match this was (Fanning has no idea what she missed out on) I can't wait for the next one!

So be sure to catch the 2nd round match of Asian Youth Games (AYG) football on Monday, 29 June 2009 at 4pm with Iran playing against People's Republic of China at TP!

Advance to GO - DPA Feature Show

Earthlings,

DPA is approaching FAST and FURIOUS!

If you’re taking your O level exam this year, you’ll want to know this… DPA, also known as the Direct Polytechnic Admission is an exercise from 8 to 13 July for O level students to secure a place in a polytechnic diploma course even before sitting for your O levels!

As a TP DPA student you’ll get to undergo a special Polytechnic Preparatory Programme (PPP), where you’ll get to attain credit units even before your friends start poly life. PPP will lessen your workload when the actual semester starts. And… when your friends start school, you can be their tour guide because you already know all the shout-cuts and good food around the campus. How cool is that?

Over the next few weeks, the tp4me team will be doing a DPA feature show entitled “ADVANCE TO GO” We’ll be introducing TP’s 6 academic schools, highlighting some of our niche courses (which unfortunately does not include martial arts), and what our DPA students have to say about TP and DPA.

You can also visit our Facebook DPA page , or the TP DPA website to learn more about TP and DPA, and get any burning questions answered!

See you all at TP real soon!

Solid as Bone,
Fanning
